7 EYES

Through acts of voyeurism, 7 EYES explores the aesthetics of the surveillance state and its role in promoting mass consumption. When you purchase something, who has already made that decision for you? Who is programming your desires? Your needs? What is it that you truly want? Who is watching you behind closed doors? How long have you been watched for? Do you enjoy being watched? Because someone likes watching you...

THE DOG: You’re being monitored by corporations. Using existing surveillance infrastructure, the government becomes their perfect watchdog. United by one goal to transform you into the perfect consumer.
THE MEATMILK: The product. You will consume what is given to you. You will not ask any questions. You will not ask the conditions through which this product is created. You will question no ethics.
THE PEEP SHOW: Changing the system? We don’t think so. The systemic pressure is too much for the average person, you are more likely to succumb to the carnal desire of a voyeur. You like watching? Because we do.

PROPAGANDA CAMPAIGN

In mid-January, I put out a call requesting assistance spreading the word for the show. 15 people showed up willing to be part of the propaganda campaign that would ensue. Everyone was prepped in clown make up to avoid facial recognition and to amplify confidence. Each clown was then given a stack of flyers that would get spread all throughout Charlotte, NC. For the LOST DOG flyer, if you were to call the number on the sheet, you would be redirected to an automated voicemail. The voicemail would invite the caller to the show and would request for them to bark at the end of the tone. This resulted in the collection of over 100 voicemails of barking callers, all which would be used inside the dog sculpture.

TILL MIDNIGHT

The closing reception was the thematic conclusion to the concepts introduced in 7 EYES. Surveillance cameras were placed around the gallery to ensure constant surveillance. As a result, guests were required to show up in clown make-up, a face mask, or any other anti-surveillance measure. 7 EYES TILL MIDNIGHT explored the idea of liberation under the eyes of surveillance through dance and community building.
